Responsible Gambling

Gambling is supposed to be fun

If it stops feeling that way, step away. Call 0700 BETS NG or visit Gamble Alert if you need to talk to someone.

Signs of a problem

  • Betting with money meant for bills, rent or food
  • Chasing losses with bigger bets
  • Hiding betting from family
  • Losing sleep or interest in other activities because of betting
  • Feeling unable to stop even when you want to

Tools that help

Every operator we review offers:

  • Deposit limits: cap your daily, weekly or monthly deposits.
  • Loss limits: stop automatically when you have lost a set amount.
  • Session time limits: get kicked out after 60/90/120 minutes.
  • Self-exclusion: block your account for months or years.
  • Reality checks: popup reminders during play.

Turn these on before you need them. Go to your account settings now.

Nigerian help resources

For concerned family

If a family member is struggling, you can contact Gamble Alert directly. You do not need to wait for the person to ask for help.

Know the warning signs

You are spending more money than you planned, across more sessions than you planned.

You are chasing losses with larger stakes to recover.

You are borrowing money to bet, or betting money set aside for rent, school fees, food or transport.

You are hiding bets from your family or partner.

You feel anxious, guilty or ashamed after a session.

You cannot enjoy a match unless you have money on it.

Limits you can set yourself

Deposit limits — every operator on Bets.ng lets you set a daily, weekly or monthly maximum deposit. You can lower the limit any time; raising it has a 24-hour cooling-off period.

Loss limits — a cap on the total amount you can lose in a set period. Many Nigerian bettors find this harder to stick to than a deposit limit, but it is a better fit for accumulator play.

Session time — many apps let you set an alert or a hard stop after X minutes of play per session.

Self-exclusion — a temporary (24-hour to 6-month) or permanent block on your account. Self-exclusion on one operator does not block you on another, which is a known problem we cover in our self-exclusion guide.

Nigerian helplines and support

If a family member is affected

Do not pay off their gambling debts for them. It almost never helps.

Do check in on their finances — is rent paid, is the house stocked, are school fees covered — before assuming things are under control.

Do encourage them to self-exclude on every operator they use, and to install a blocking tool (Gamban, BetBlocker) on every device.

Do consider a joint account for household expenses so at least the basics are ring-fenced.

Do reach out to GamSafe Nigeria — they run a family-support WhatsApp group specifically for Nigerian households.

If you are thinking of stopping

Self-exclude on every operator account you have. Write the list on paper so you do not miss one.

Install Gamban or BetBlocker on every device — phone, laptop, work computer.

Delete the apps, not just log out.

Hand your debit card to a trusted family member for a week.

Tell one person you trust. Shame is the thing that keeps this cycle spinning, and telling someone is how you break the shame.

Book a session with Gamble Alert NG or a counsellor at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Yaba. It is free.
